Maintenance for a green roof should be given thought from the laying stage. All roofs, green or otherwise need to be maintained. On a un-greened roof this involves a once yearly visual check and removal of debris from roof and gutters. The maintenance required on a green roof will depend on the type of planting/location and the desired visual effect.
We usually give annual visits to sedum roofs to clear any weeds and apply fertilizer in the early spring. We clear drainage outlets and remove plant growth and debris from the boarders.
Wildflower roofs usually need a weed and cut once a year in late autumn or early winter.
If a roof is particularly overgrown and neglected it mat need the majority of the plant growth stripping, a top up of substrate and replanting.
