The main types of materials used for pitched roofing in Britain are natural slate, clay tiles, concrete tiles and fibre cement slates. All these materials have different lifespans and dramatically different appearances.
Natural slate is formed when ocean and riverbed sediments are compressed and heated by the earth’s crust. Slate varies in quality and lifespan. Some slate roofs that need re roofing may be able to have a proportion of the old slate re-laid ,topping up any damaged slates with matching re-claimed slates. Another option is to source new or re-claimed slate for the entire roof.
Clay roof tiles are durable and sustainable products that improve with age and weathering. They are available in a wide variety of permanent colours and textures which over time will weather and mellow, but never fade. Clay tiles range from traditional roman, pantile and small plain styles to new interlocking large format designs.
Concrete tiles are available in a wide range of styles and colours , from replicas of old clay profiles to tiles that can be used at low pitches. These tiles are generally an economic option but often suffer from colour fade over time and have a shorter life span than best quality natural materials.
Fibre cement slates are a mix of water, cement, cellulose and synthetic fibres. These slates are lightweight and economical and becoming increasingly popular.
We also install re-cycled slate and wooden shingles and shakes.
